Emancipation: 1865
Sighted through the telescopes of dreams
Looms larger, so it seems,
Than truth can be.
But turn the telescope around,
Look through the larger end-
And wonder why what was so large
Becomes so small again.
“The Long View: Negro,” Langston Hughes
I hope the Treyvon Martin case and the opportunity it presents for a real discussion on race and racism in the US is not lost. I hope we sieze this opportunity and face the challenges we still have head on.
From Selma to Sanford
The eyes of the nation have been focused like a laser beam on the Florida town of Sanford, much as they once were on Selma and Birmingham in the 1960's. This new attention has brought increased scrutiny on the local police department and the string of racial charged or tinged events that have occured in recent years. I hope that this attention is not in vain and that the intense scrutiny not only works to give justice to Trayvon and his family, but it also helps to solve the other unsolved cases that still remain. I also hope that it gives voice to the voiceless and keeps our eye on the prize of achieving a nation where all are treated equally without respect to ones diversity.

The death of Trayvon Martin garnered only local coverage in the days and weeks after the shooting that took his life by George Zimmerman. Some say that the lack of racial diversity in newsrooms around the country contributed to this lack of coverage. At first, just local news channels covered the story. It was not until nearly 3 weeks later that CBS became the first national news network to give the case any attention. It was not until the 911 calls were released, however, that really started to drive the national narrative on the case.
The National attention that has been brought down on the town of Sanford, Florida will most likely turn out to be what saves the famlies quest for justice for Trayvon. Without the attention brought onto the investigation, or lack thereof, the case would have most likely remained closed, with George Zimmerman a free man. Let's hope that nation's attention will not be in vain and charges are soon brought against Trayvon's killer.
